For this project the objective was to design a lamp for a family or friend.

The first stage was the discovery stage, during this stage I approached my client and conducted an interview to discover the problem and the opportunities. My client for this project is my sister, she is called Helen Huang, through the interview I was able smoothly move into the next phase which was the define phase helping me to gather the most important points regarding her personality, hobbies and expectations for an ideal lamp.

Personality and hobbies

-Most of her time are spent at home.

-Has a short concentration span.

-Not much patience.

-Loves to play on her phone.

-Loves K-pop.

Expectations for lamp

-Warm coloured light that isn't too bright.

-Portable is good but not a must.

-Include elements of her favourite K-pop group.

-Make it customizable

-Making sure that the area of light beam is controllable

After a little more of contextual studies of my client's room, I began gathering inspiration before moving on to the development phase.

After I producing all the concept drawing, I got my client to pick out her favourite design. The design I continued developing was the microphone themed portable torch and stand.

After the third round of discussion with my client I was able to finalize my design and go the the last phase of the double diamond design process which is the delivery phase. In this phase I made specification prototypes, this includes creating a prototype that is almost exactly the same as the final outcome. Due to quarantine I didn't have access to all the machines and materials so instead I made detail drawings of how I would like the mechanism of the lamp to be, the dimensions and material that will be used.

Overall for this design I feel like the most successful part is that my client is very approachable and specific. The lamp design is dedicated to her so I didn't need to do any market research. There was some mistakes and long paths I took during the process but I am happy with how it turned out in the end and most importantly my client was satisfied with the outcome.
