A mountain village
Under the pilled up snow
The sound of water
For the first poster the design briefs are to create a composition which consists of only geometric shapes in black and white. The design should focis on composition and representation.
To begin, I started off with analyzing my chosen Haiku, we were given very strict time limits to brainstorm all possible ideas.
During that time I came up with 3 main themes:
CONTROL: Mountain village represents shelter and home. Snow are a metaphor of parents that pushes all their expectations on us. Water are us, the sound also gives a sense of movement and demonstrating the idea of pushing through and moving on.
PEACE: Imagery of a cozy cottage came into mind. Visualize an old man reading newspaper on a comfy couch in front of the fireplace.
ISOLATION: Isolation from the wider society, a completely alienated environment. Portraying a sense of loneliness.
This was the rough sketches I made during class, because it was my first time trying to produce ideas in such a short amount of time. I wasn't able to complete all 9 ideas.

I settled on the theme of isolation, the poster below was my first trailed poster however I wasn't satisfied with the obvious marks of the marker and not a big fan of the ovals representing foot steps on the background. I also wanted to focus more on the accuracy of the scale for the arrows.

Here is a second attempt with paint.

Overall i'm really satisfied with the crisp lines I was able to create and how opaque the black was turned out after three thick coats of paint. For the future I believe it would be much better if I tested out my design digitally first before I start making the final piece because after looking back at this work after some time I feel like it would be more effective if the arrows were more randomly orientated.
